In short: Born from a 1930s cross-breeding experiment in New Zealand, the Gala apple has quietly conquered the global market. Once a niche seedling, this sweet, crisp fruit now dominates orchards from Washington to Brazil, fundamentally shifting how we eat and grow apples in the twenty-first century.

The Gala apple began as an accidental triumph in Greytown, New Zealand, during the 1930s. Orchardist J.H. Kidd crossed a Golden Delicious with a Kidd's Orange Red, resulting in a tree that produced fruit with a distinct orange-striped appearance and a mild, sweet flavor. While selected in 1939 and introduced in 1960, it took decades for the variety to achieve its current status. By 1974, Donald W. McKenzie of Stark Bros Nursery secured a US plant patent, setting the stage for its international expansion.

The variety's rise is a story of commercial displacement. In the United Kingdom, it began replacing the traditional Cox's Orange Pippin in the 1980s, eventually accounting for 20% of commercial production. Similarly, in Canada, government subsidies in the 2000s encouraged farmers to swap out older varieties like the McIntosh for the more profitable Gala. In the United States, the shift was even more dramatic: in 2018, the Gala finally unseated the Red Delicious as the nation's top-produced apple, a position the Red Delicious had held for over 50 years. By 2024, the Gala commanded 17% of American apple sales.

Much of the Gala's success is attributed to its adaptability and the development of 'sports'—natural mutations selected for specific traits. The most famous of these is the Royal Gala, patented in 1977, which features a deeper, redder skin that consumers often prefer over the original's orange-yellow hue. Today, the Gala is a global staple, available year-round thanks to advanced cold storage and controlled atmosphere technology. While the original pink-hued Gala has largely vanished from commercial shelves in its home country of New Zealand, its descendants continue to define the modern apple industry.
