How to spot a dying plant before you buy it

In short: The nursery bargain bench is a tempting place for a deal, but many plants are beyond saving. From hidden root issues to invisible decay, learning to read the subtle signs of life can save your garden and your wallet.

When browsing clearance sections, the first step is identifying what is truly salvageable. Avoid annuals that have already begun producing fruit or flowers, as these plants are likely nearing the end of their life cycle and are unlikely to thrive in a new environment. Similarly, any specimens showing visible signs of disease or pests should be sent straight to the compost rather than your garden.

For larger potted trees, the danger is often hidden beneath the surface. Inspect the roots by pulling the tree from its pot; if you see a mass of roots coiling around the container or protruding from drainage holes, the tree is heavily pot-bound. Such plants struggle to develop healthy root systems and face a high risk of failure or tipping over later. If you do find a plant worth saving that is pot-bound, repot it into a container only one size larger than the current one to prevent serious transplant shock.

To determine if a deciduous plant is still alive, you can locate the cambium layer. Gently scratch the bark with your fingernail; a fresh green layer indicates life, while a brown layer suggests the plant is dead. For shrubs, look for new growth at the tips or buds at the base of the trunk. If a plant is suffering from extreme dryness, particularly ferns, you can attempt to revive it by cutting the foliage down to ground level and providing a deep soaking.

Maintenance after purchase is equally vital. To encourage a struggling plant to focus its energy on root production rather than unnecessary blooms, remove any spent flowers. Additionally, pruning dead or damaged foliage can help stimulate further growth in plants that have endured rough conditions.
