Why the flu virus is a master of disguise that constantly outsmarts our immunity
In short: Influenza A is a highly infectious pathogen that spreads through coughs and sneezes, often lingering on surfaces for a full day. While we treat it with rest and hydration, the virus itself is a shapeshifter, constantly mutating to evade our immune systems and jump between different animal species.
Influenza A virus is a persistent pathogen that infects humans, birds, and various mammals. Its ability to evolve is driven by a segmented RNA genome that allows for rapid mutation and genetic reassortment. This variability means the virus can frequently change its surface proteins, effectively bypassing the antibodies our bodies have previously developed. Because of this constant evolution, vaccines must be reformulated regularly to remain effective against circulating strains.
The virus is classified by two primary surface proteins: hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. Scientists have identified 18 distinct varieties of hemagglutinin and 11 types of neuraminidase, which combine to create different subtypes like H1N1 or H5N1. However, these surface markers are only a fraction of the virus's genetic complexity. The virion itself is a microscopic structure, measuring between 80 and 120 nanometers, and relies on a lipid envelope derived from the host cell to survive and infect new targets.
For humans, the illness typically manifests as a sudden fever, cough, and body aches, often leaving the infected person feeling too exhausted to function. While most people manage symptoms with rest, ibuprofen, or paracetamol, the virus can be dangerous for those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions. Antibiotics are ineffective against this viral infection, as they only target bacteria. If symptoms like severe breathing difficulty or chest pain arise, medical intervention is critical, as the virus can lead to fatal complications like pneumonia.
