How four generations of one family cultivated a three-hectare botanical legacy
In short: Explore the Mernda Heights garden, a spectacular collection of mature plantings and rare species maintained by the same family for four generations.
The garden features a significant collection of old rhododendron varieties and species, originally established by Frederick J. Coles, a foundation member of the Australian Rhododendron Society. Visitors can wander through a Laburnum walk, view exquisite rock walling by Aaron Condon, and see azaleas planted as far back as the 1950s.
Thriving on deep volcanic soil and 1.5m of annual rainfall, the property hosts a birch copse, Monterey cypress pines planted by a great uncle during WWII, and roughly 60 magnolias. Maintaining this six-acre estate involves annual mulching and periodic cultivation to preserve its classic hill station character.
