How a hereditary baronetcy balances old-world charm with modern sustainability
In short: The historic Bolinda Vale estate manages to preserve a sense of old-world elegance while stripping away the impracticality of the past. By blending traditional English garden beds with native Australian landscapes, the property demonstrates how heritage sites can evolve to meet modern environmental demands without losing their soul.
Located 50km north of Melbourne, Bolinda Vale is a 2025-hectare working sheep and cattle farm. It was once part of the massive 100,000-hectare Rupertswood estate, a site of significant cultural history that hosted the original "Ashes" cricket match and numerous Melbourne Cup garden parties. Since 2005, the property has been managed by Lady Susannah Clarke and Sir Rupert Clarke, who inherited the land along with Australia's only hereditary baronetcy.
The estate's seven-and-a-half-acre garden serves as a study in landscape evolution. Near the homestead, the garden maintains a traditional "English" aesthetic, featuring mature Apple Trees and flowering plants like Bluebells, Lily of the Valley, and Solomon’s Seal. However, Lady Susannah has actively moved the property out of a "time warp" by removing high-maintenance features like Cypress hedges, a tennis court, and a kitchen garden that was too difficult to maintain on the property's tank water system.
The most significant transformation involves a new landscape created in collaboration with a renowned designer. This section utilizes large existing rocks, mature Eucalypts, and a wide array of native Australian plants, including Grass Trees and Bottle Trees. To ensure sustainability, the design incorporates a billabong that recirculates runoff and overflow water using a large solar pump. This seamless transition between exotic heritage and native beauty reflects a shift toward celebrating Australian flora while maintaining the estate's historic character.
