Saving the world's largest Victorian glasshouse requires a massive, multi-year restoration effort.
In short: The Temperate House at Kew Gardens, a historic Victorian structure, underwent a significant five-year restoration starting in 2013. This project aimed to preserve the iconic glasshouse and its surrounding landscape while upgrading nearby facilities for public engagement.
Opened in 1863, the Temperate House stands as the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse globally. The restoration initiative, launched on 5 August 2013, was a major undertaking with a total budget of £34.3 million. Beyond repairing the main structure and landscape, the project included converting the Evolution House into a modern public engagement centre.
Funding for this preservation effort was supported by various organizations and donors, including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Defra, and the J Paul Getty Jr Charitable Trust. While a significant portion of the capital was secured, Kew Gardens actively sought an additional £1 million to ensure the project's completion.
