In short: Members of the Forgeside Rugby Club in Blaenavon, Wales, transformed a patch of land near their pitch into a thriving community garden. This initiative, supported by the RHS Community Garden Scheme, provides fresh produce for local food banks and offers a new hub for horticultural education.

The project began when players from the Forgeside Rugby Club, who had no prior gardening experience, secured funding to address food poverty in their area. Working alongside Swansea-based landscape architect Victoria Wade, they converted the site into a functional kitchen garden. The space now features vegetable beds, fruit patches, and a greenhouse dedicated to supplying fresh food to the local food bank.

Beyond food production, the garden serves as a social and educational hub. It includes a pizza oven and a communal dining area designed to bring the community together. The site also provides dedicated space for school children and youth groups to learn essential horticultural skills.
