In short: Founded by former Square alumni, 1-Up Studio began as Brownie Brown, named after hardworking Scottish fairies. After decades of creating beloved handheld titles, the Tokyo-based developer underwent a structural shift to become a specialized support studio for Nintendo.

The studio's origins trace back to June 30, 2000, when Shinichi Kameoka and Kouji Tsuda left Square due to differing ideals. Seeking to develop games for the Game Boy Advance, they established Brownie Brown. The name was inspired by Brownies, friendly and industrious fairies from Scottish folklore, a figure reflected in the company's logo. The founders had previously worked on the Mana series for the Super NES and Game Boy platforms. This early experience helped shape their vision for the new company.

During its formative period, the studio prioritised unique works, such as the 2001 Game Boy Advance release 'Magical Vacation', which launched only in Japan. They also contributed to the development of 'Mother 3' alongside Shigesato Itoi and HAL Laboratory. Other notable projects included 'Sword of Mana' for Square Enix and 'Magical Starsign' for the Nintendo DS. The studio also worked on the DS title Livly Garden. Additionally, they aided in the development of two Level-5 titles, including Fantasy Life.

A significant transition occurred on February 1, 2013. Following intensive co-development efforts with Nintendo, the company restructured and rebranded as 1-Up Studio. This shift saw Kameoka depart to form a new studio, Brownies, while Yoshiaki Koizumi joined the board of directors. Since the 2010s, the studio has functioned primarily as a support studio for Nintendo EPD, providing essential artistry, design, and programming expertise. The company also released Blue Dragon Plus for the Nintendo DS alongside Mistwalker. They also entered the downloadable games market in 2009.

By 2020, the studio's presence in the industry was solidified by its move to the Nintendo Tokyo Office building at Kanda Square, sharing space with major entities like Game Freak and HAL Laboratory. The headquarters is located in Tokyo. This facility is shared with Nintendo PTD Tokyo and the Nintendo R&D Centre.
