A new era begins for Japan's second-tier professional football league
In short: The 2026–27 J2 League marks a historic structural shift for Japanese football. Moving to a summer-to-spring format, the 28th season of this professional tier will feature 20 teams competing for promotion to the top flight.
The upcoming 2026–27 season, also known as the Meiji Yasuda J2 League, represents the first time the competition will operate under a summer-to-spring schedule. This marks the twelfth season since the league rebranded from J.League Division 2. The 20-team roster for the season will consist of fourteen returning teams from the previous year, three clubs relegated from the J1 League, and three clubs promoted from the J3 League. This upcoming iteration is the 28th edition of the competition since its 1999 inception. The league's sponsorship name is the Meiji Yasuda J2 League.
The path to the J1 League involves a complex promotion playoff system. Following the regular season, the third-placed team competes against the sixth-placed team, while the fourth-placed team faces the fifth-placed team. The winners of these semi-finals meet in a final, with the victor earning promotion. In the event of a tie during these playoffs, the team with the higher regular-season league position is declared the winner. The semi-final matchups are determined by the final standings of the regular season. This structure ensures that higher-ranked teams receive a competitive advantage.
The league's roster dynamics are also shaped by international regulations. While there are no longer restrictions on the total number of foreign players a club can sign, a match-day squad is limited to five foreign players. Nevertheless, squad limits do not apply to athletes from J.League partner countries, such as Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Qatar. A maximum of five non-domestic players can be included in a match-day squad by any club. This rule applies despite the removal of overall signing limits.
