Japan's football league is pivoting to an autumn-spring calendar
In short: To modernize its sporting landscape, Japan's J1 League is undergoing a structural overhaul. A special one-off tournament in 2026 serves as the bridge for this transition, introducing regional divisions and unique scoring rules that redefine how clubs compete for continental glory.
The J1 100 Year Vision League acts as a transitional mechanism for the Japan Professional Football League (J.League) as it moves to an autumn-spring system in 2026. This special tournament, featuring all 20 J1 clubs, functions without relegation to the J2 League. It is structured into two distinct regions: East, comprising 10 clubs in the Greater Tokyo Area, and West, consisting of 10 teams from outside the capital region.
The competition employs a double round-robin format within these regions, with specific considerations for snowy regions where matches cannot occur in February or March. A unique point system is in place: while standard points apply, winners of penalty shoot-outs receive two points and losers receive one. The tournament concludes with a final ranking phase where teams with identical regional ranks face off in home and away legs during late May and early June 2026.
Significant rewards motivate participants, as JPY 150 million awaits champions, while second-place finishers earn JPY 60 million and third-place teams take home JPY 30 million. Furthermore, the two finalists secure spots in the 2026–27 AFC Champions League Elite league stage. This structural shift highlights a sophisticated approach to balancing regional logistics with high-level international qualification.
Regarding personnel, clubs have been permitted to sign foreign players without limits since 2019, though they may only register five for a single matchday squad. Notable exemptions exist for players from J.League partner nations—including Thailand, Vietnam, and Morocco—as well as those born in Japan who attended approved schools.
