In short: When the Star Trek franchise split into separate timelines, fans were left with unresolved endings. Now, a groundbreaking digital experiment is using advanced visual effects to reunite legendary characters, blurring the lines between reality, memory, and the afterlife in a way never before seen on screen.

In mid-2023, Jules Urbach conceived a concept video titled "765874 – Unification" to address a specific narrative frustration: the separate deaths of James T. Kirk and Spock across different Star Trek timelines. Kirk's death occurred in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations, while Spock's death was relegated to off-screen events in the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond. To provide these characters with a meaningful sendoff, the Roddenberry Archive collaborated with OTOY to create a visual experience that transcends traditional storytelling.

The short film, directed by Carlos Baena, lacks dialogue and relies entirely on visual subtext. This ambiguity allows for three distinct interpretations: Kirk has been resurrected and traveled to the Kelvin Timeline, the reunion is a mental projection occurring as Spock lies on his deathbed, or the characters are meeting in an afterlife. To maintain continuity for these aged characters, the film employed both digital and physical prosthetics to mimic the appearances of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

The project is more than just fan service; it is a technical showcase for the Apple Vision Pro app, The Archive. By using virtual production techniques and digital recreations of classic sets, the team explored how digital technology can visualize "unfilmed" history. Released on November 18, 2024, to mark the 30th anniversary of Generations, the video has already garnered over 20 million views, sparking intense debate among fans regarding whether such high-tech digital recreations should be considered part of the official Star Trek canon.
