The massive glass empire behind your smartphone screen and stadium roofs
In short: From the smartphone in your pocket to the Allianz Arena's exterior, AGC Inc. is a global manufacturing titan. As the world's largest glass company, this Japanese giant produces everything from specialized display glass to high-performance polymer films that define modern architectural landmarks.
Headquartered in Tokyo, AGC Inc. (formerly Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.) stands as one of the core Mitsubishi companies and the largest glass manufacturer globally. Toshiya Iwasaki, son of the original Mitsubishi zaibatsu's second president, established the company on 8 September 1907, making it Japan's inaugural manufacturer of sheet glass. The firm is currently listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It is also a constituent of both the Nikkei 225 and TOPIX indices.
The company's reach extends into highly specialized materials. Their performance chemicals include Fluon ETFE laminate, a material used for the exterior of the Allianz Arena football stadium, which was completed in 2005 and represents the world's largest structure made from ETFE. They also produce display glass, such as the Dragontrail used in smartphones. Beyond glass, the company manufactures uPVC, aluminium, and wooden profile windows. They also produce a wide variety of automotive safety and architectural glass.
AGC's history is marked by significant global expansion and occasional controversy. In 1992, the company purchased AFG Industries in North America. However, the firm was also implicated in a 2007 price-fixing scandal involving the EU Competition Commission, where it was one of four manufacturers accused of illicitly stabilizing prices in 2004 and 2005. In 2013, Thomson Reuters identified the firm as a Top 100 Global Innovator.
Today, AGC maintains a massive international footprint. This includes Asahi India Glass Ltd., which held a 77.1% market share in the Indian passenger car glass segment as of 2017, and NordGlass, a Polish manufacturer acquired by AGC in 2015 that supplies windshields across Europe, South America, and North Africa. In Indonesia, the company operates as IDX: AMFG, serving as a major automobile glass provider. Their Indian joint venture was formed in 1984 with Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.
