From a joint venture to global giant, the century-long evolution of Yokohama Rubber
In short: Founded in 1917 as a partnership between Yokohama Cable Manufacturing and BFGoodrich, Yokohama Rubber has grown from a local Japanese manufacturer into a global powerhouse. While famous for its performance tires and motorsport presence, the company also produces specialized industrial equipment and has expanded through massive international acquisitions.
The Yokohama Rubber Company began its journey on October 13, 1917, in Hiratsuka, Japan. Initially established as a joint venture between Yokohama Electric Cable Manufacturing and the BFGoodrich Company, the firm spent its early years utilizing American-made equipment to produce rubber belts, hoses, and tires. For the first several years, the tires it manufactured were sold within Japan under the Goodrich brand, a relationship that lasted until 1981 when BFGoodrich sold its remaining shares in the company.
Over the decades, the company diversified its operations significantly. By 1983, it launched the PRGR brand for golf equipment and introduced the iconic Performance Y logo, which eventually became its corporate identity. The company's growth strategy has increasingly relied on large-scale acquisitions. In 2016, it purchased the Alliance Tire Group for $1.18 billion, and in 2022, it announced the acquisition of Trelleborg Wheel Systems for 2.1 billion euro, or approximately $2.31 billion, marking its largest purchase to date.
Today, Yokohama is deeply embedded in the automotive world, supplying tires for everything from passenger vehicles and electric cars to high-performance motorsport teams. Its product portfolio is segmented into specialized families like ADVAN for performance, GEOLANDAR for off-road use, and AVID for touring. Beyond manufacturing, the company maintains a high-profile presence in global sports, having sponsored Premier League club Chelsea and NBA teams like the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs, while serving as a long-standing supplier for racing events ranging from the Macau Grand Prix to the FIA Extreme H World Cup.
