In short: The Tokyo 2020 archery events introduced a significant change to the Olympic program. For the first time, athletes competed in a mixed team event, adding a new layer of strategic complexity to the traditional recurve disciplines held at Yumenoshima Park.

The archery competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics, which was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, featured five distinct events. These included the men's and women's individual competitions, the men's and women's team events, and the newly introduced mixed team event. All matches were conducted using the recurve archery format at a standardized 70-meter distance. These recurve disciplines were held under specific World Archery-approved rules. All five events were scheduled to take place at the Yumenoshima Park venue.

The qualification structure for these games was rigorous. A total of 128 qualifying places were available, split equally with 64 spots for men and 64 for women. While Japan was granted six places as the host nation, the remaining 118 spots were allocated through various processes, including the 2019 World Archery Championships and continental events. Notably, the mixed team event did not have a separate qualification process; instead, the top 16 pairs were determined during the initial ranking rounds at the Games. Additionally, the Tripartite Commission was responsible for deciding four of the reserved spots. A maximum of six competitors could be entered by each National Olympic Committee.

To determine the seeds, archers competed in a ranking round where each individual shot 72 arrows. In the mixed team event, the scores of a nation's top-scoring man and woman were summed to determine eligibility. The competition utilized a single-elimination format, with the exception of the semi-final losers, who competed in a bronze medal play-off. Individual matches followed the Archery Olympic Round, a best-of-five set system where a tie at 5–5 required a single arrow shoot-off to decide the winner. In the team format, each set consists of six arrows. The top four seeded teams received a bye directly to the quarter-finals.
