How dietary fiber and enclosure timing protect poultry welfare
In short: Beyond their role as majestic displays of wealth, aviaries are critical tools for animal health. New research suggests that the simple timing of when an enclosure is opened, combined with specific fiber levels in feed, can significantly reduce skin injuries and plumage damage in commercial birds.
In commercial poultry rearing, managing the integument—the skin and feathers—is a complex challenge. Issues such as plumage damage from feather pelect, skin injuries from cannibalism, and keel bone alterations threaten both animal welfare and profitability. A study of 3,872 Lohmann Brown Classic pullets investigated how two specific variables—dietary crude fiber and the timing of aviary opening—impact these health markers.
The researchers compared standard fiber levels (4.9% in grower feed and 5.8% in developer feed) against moderately elevated levels (6.8% in grower and 7.8% in developer). They also tested opening aviary levels at day 14 versus day 28. The results showed that later opening times and lower fiber content were significantly associated with increased plumage damage to the back and belly, as well as more skin injuries.
Notably, increased fibre did not provide universal advantages; a notable interaction emerged, as higher fibre levels only helped decrease skin injuries if the aviary opened on day 28. While the study found that 5.4% of birds exhibited keel bone deviations at week 16, these deviations and wing feather loss were not significantly linked to the fiber or timing variables studied.
Historically, aviaries have served much more than just research or welfare purposes. From the 19th-century aristocratic displays of the Rothschild family to the massive steel structures of the San Diego Zoo, these enclosures have been symbols of status and architectural ambition. Today, the focus has shifted toward using targeted environmental and nutritional strategies to optimize the health of the birds within them.
