From Midwestern retail giant to a digital ghost in the machine
In short: Founded in 1854, Carson's was a cornerstone of American commerce, boasting over 50 locations across the Midwest. However, a series of acquisitions and bankruptcies transformed this retail powerhouse into a purely online entity, leaving its once-grand flagship buildings and physical stores to history.
The history of Carson Pirie Scott & Co. is a saga of expansion and eventual dissolution. Established in 1854 by Samuel Carson and John Thomas Pirie, the company began as clerks in a dry goods store in Peru, Illinois. The business grew significantly, eventually acquiring the 20-unit Block & Kuhl chain in 1961 and diversifying into airline catering through the $108 million purchase of Dobbs Houses, Inc. in 1980. The enterprise's early growth was marked by a significant loss when the Great Chicago Fire destroyed most of its inventory in 1871. Later, the firm expanded its reach by purchasing the County Seat clothing chain.
The company's physical presence was anchored by its flagship store in the Chicago Loop, a building designed by Louis Sullivan for Schlesinger & Mayer. After that company's bankruptcy in 1904, Carson Pirie Scott acquired the building, which served as its flagship until the store closed in February 2007. The brand underwent several ownership shifts, including acquisitions by P.A. Bergner & Co. in 1989 and Proffitt's, Inc. in 1998. The company's leadership included two sons of John Edwin Scott, Robert and Frederick. Furthermore, the brand was eventually managed by the Saks Northern Department Store Group.
The end of the physical era arrived when the Bon-Ton Stores Inc. collection, which included Carson's, entered bankruptcy. On April 17, 2018, Bon-Ton announced it would cease operations and liquidate its 267 stores. While the brand's intellectual property was purchased by CSC Generation to continue as a virtual retailer, the last physical location—the Evergreen Park, Illinois store—closed in October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, the brand exists only online, with its digital future remaining in a state of limbo. Following the liquidation, the brand's trademarks were acquired by BrandX. Currently, the website's relaunch has been delayed, leaving the online presence uncertain.
