In short: The name CEAT carries a legacy that spans continents and industries. While it is now a titan of Indian tyre manufacturing, its origins lie in Italian electrical cables. This evolution from a failing European firm to a global industrial leader reveals a complex history of acquisitions, rebranding, and survival.

The company's lineage began in 1924 in Turin, Italy, under the name Cavi Elettrici e Affini Torino, founded by Virginio Bruni Tedeschi. Originally focused on electrical cables and allied products, the entity underwent a significant transformation in 1958 when it was incorporated as CEAT Tyres of India in Mumbai. This period saw a collaboration with the Tata Group, marking the early stages of its transition into the automotive component sector.

The brand faced a period of instability in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1980, Alberto Tedeschi sold the Italian firm to the investment firm SOFIT, which subsequently led to job cuts and the company's failure in Italy. During this transition, Pirelli purchased the rights to the CEAT name. The RPG Group eventually acquired the company in 1982, leading to its official rebranding as CEAT in 1990. This acquisition saved the brand from collapse and set the stage for its modern manufacturing scale.

Today, CEAT is a multinational powerhouse producing over 48 million tyres annually. The company has expanded its footprint through strategic joint ventures, such as the 1993 collaboration with Yokohama Rubber Company and a 1999 joint venture with Asia MotorWorks to enter the Sri Lankan market. Its manufacturing capabilities now exceed 800 tonnes per day across multiple plants in India, supporting a diverse range of vehicles from heavy commercial trucks to luxury SUVs and high-performance motorcycles.
