The diverse campus that produces the leaders of Los Angeles County
In short: California State University, Dominguez Hills is more than just a commuter school. Functioning as a vital driver for political leadership and social mobility in Southern California, this institution is among the most economically and ethnically diverse universities in the western United States.
Founded in 1960, CSUDH was established partly in response to the African American outcry for higher education opportunities. The university has since become a vital institution for the Southern geographical region of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Within the California State University system, no other campus enrolls a higher number or percentage of African American students.
The university's impact on local governance is striking. In 2022, five CSUDH graduates simultaneously served as mayors for different cities in Los Angeles County: Rex Richardson (Long Beach), Emma Sharif (Compton), Lula Davis-Holmes (Carson), Alex Vargas (Hawthorne), and Karen Bass (Los Angeles). This surge of leadership reflects the school's mission as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and its role in serving the populations of South Los Angeles.
Beyond its political influence, the campus is a hub for specialized research and facilities. It hosts the only Olympic-standard velodrome in the United States, which was used during the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Furthermore, the American Indian Institute is located on campus, striving to boost graduation and enrollment rates for Indigenous students across the CSU system.
The institution is also deeply committed to STEM and community engagement. A $4 million grant from Toyota was awarded to the university in 2017 to construct the Science and Innovation Building. Furthermore, 65% of its students participate in service learning, earning the university a place on the 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
