In short: The Catholic Charismatic Renewal isn't a rigid organization with a single founder. Instead, it is described as a "current of grace"—a spiritual breath intended to make faith a living reality rather than a list of rules. It seeks to move religion from the head to the heart.

Beginning in 1967 at Duquesne University, the movement emerged when Catholics experienced what they described as being "baptized in the Holy Spirit." This experience is characterized by a personal, one-to-one relationship with Jesus Christ, where the individual seeks to hear what the Lord is saying directly. Unlike traditional liturgical focus, charismatic worship emphasizes deep emotional experiences, including glossolalia (speaking in tongues), prophecy, and faith healing. The movement is distinct because it lacks a singular founder or a homogeneous structure. For every Church member, including bishops and laity, Cardinal Leo Joseph Suenens defined the phenomenon as a 'renewing breath of the Spirit'. It draws heavily from American Protestantism, specifically Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism, but remains rooted in Catholic theology.

It identifies nine "extraordinary" charismatic gifts—such as miracles, discernment of spirits, and expressions of wisdom—which are distinct from the traditional seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. One of the most significant aspects of the Renewal is its ecumenical nature. It has fostered "covenant communities" where Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, and other Christians live a shared life based on their common experience of the Spirit. While the Vatican was initially reticent, Pope Paul VI officially welcomed the movement in 1975. By 2013, the movement had over 160 million members worldwide, supported by the papacy and various international offices to coordinate its global pastoral ministry. The movement's international growth was fueled by missionary priests who returned home after experiencing these events in the United States. These pioneers established local services in countries like Brazil, Nigeria, and India during the early 1970s. Furthermore, the movement celebrated its golden jubilee in 2017 to mark fifty years of history. This milestone was organized jointly by the ICCRS and the Catholic Fraternity.
