The physician turned pirate was inspired by a real surgeon's ordeal
In short: While Captain Blood is a fictional legend, his origins are rooted in the brutal reality of the 1688 Monmouth Rebellion. Rafael Sabatini wove historical political shifts and the true story of a condemned surgeon into a sweeping maritime odyssey of escape and vengeance.
In his 1922 novel, *Captain Blood: His Odyssey*, Rafael Saboon Sabatini crafted a protagonist who is far more than a mere swashbuckler. Dr. Peter Blood is depicted as a sharp-witted Irish physician and former soldier who finds himself caught in the crossfire of the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The narrative uses the era's shifting political alliances as a pivotal plot device, allowing the character to eventually transition from a convicted traitor back to a position of respectability.
The character's harrowing journey mirrors the real-life experiences of Henry Pitman. A surgeon who treated wounded Monmouth rebels, Pitman was sentenced to death by the infamous Judge George Jeffreys. Although his death sentence was commuted to penal transportation to Barbados, Pitman's actual path diverged from the fiction; he did not become a pirate, but instead returned to England to publish a popular account of his hardships. Sabatini, however, used Pitman's legal struggle to anchor Blood's initial arrest and subsequent forced servitude in Barbados.
Beyond Pitman, Sabatini drew from various historical figures to flesh out the buccaneer lifestyle, including the exploits of Henry Morgan and the detailed accounts of Alexandre Exquemelin. The novel even touches upon the grim realities of the era, such as the ten-year hard labour sentences imposed on Monmouth rebels, which closely resembled chattel slavery. Through an omniscient narrator, the story explores themes of justice, survival, and the thin line between criminality and heroism in the Caribbean.
