The Australian finger lime is a botanical marvel with surprising medicinal and agricultural potential
In short: Known as lime caviar, the finger lime is a thorny rainforest shrub producing cylindrical fruits filled with effervescent, tangy juice vesicles. Beyond its status as a gourmet bushfood, this unique plant offers significant agricultural value, including natural disease resistance and a remarkable range of genetic colour variations for modern cultivation.
Citrus australasica, commonly known as the finger lime, is a thorny understorey shrub native to the coastal rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. First described by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller in 1858, the species has a complex taxonomic history. While American botanist Walter Tennyson Swingle moved it to a separate genus, Microcitrus, in 1915, later research by David Mabberley in 1998 restored it to the genus Citrus, citing the species' ability to cross-breed with other citrus varieties.
The plant is highly valued for its fruit, which contains globular juice vesicles often used as a garnish. Historically, First Peoples of Australia utilized the fruit for hydration and as a treatment for skin infections and cuts. Modern science has identified that the fruit contains vitamin C, folate, potassium, vitamin E, and polyphenols. Furthermore, research since the 1970s has highlighted the plant’s resistance to Phytophthora citrophthora root disease, leading to its use in breeding programs to develop robust citrus rootstock. More recently, in 2020, researchers began investigating the species as a potential solution for Citrus greening disease.
Commercially, the finger lime has seen a surge in popularity since the mid-1990s. It is now cultivated widely, with the CSIRO developing hybrids that showcase an extraordinary range of colours, from light pink to deep blue-green. Despite its commercial success, the species remains a resilient component of its native ecosystem, currently assessed as of least concern by the IUCN. It is notably resistant to the Queensland fruit fly, which simplifies export processes for Australian growers who rely on wild-harvested genetic selections for propagation.
