The science of stones: why crystals can't actually cure your ailments
In short: From ancient Egyptian amulets to modern New Age spas, the allure of crystal healing is enduring. Proponents claim these stones channel energy to balance our bodies. But while they might induce a sense of calm, what does the actual science say about their ability to heal?
Modern crystal healing is built on the belief that gemstones act as conduits for 'healing energy.' Practitioners often align specific stones with chakras—vortices of life-energy (chi or qi) believed to connect the physical and supernatural. For instance, amethyst might be used for the intestines, while green aventurine is associated with the heart. However, Western medicine largely dismisses these concepts as pseudoscience because there is no evidence that diseases result from 'energy flows' in the body.
From a physics perspective, while crystals do possess energy according to Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence (e=mc²), there is no documented mechanism for energy transfer between a mineral and a human being. Furthermore, scientific studies have failed to find any way to differentiate stones by chemical composition or color to treat specific medical conditions. In fact, research suggests that the perceived benefits of crystal healing are likely driven by the placebo effect—a psychological phenomenon where a patient feels better because they expect to, rather than due to the treatment itself.
One notable study from 2001 involved 80 participants who meditated while holding either real quartz or fake crystals. Those told the crystals were real reported sensations like tingling or warmth, but those holding fake crystals reported the exact same effects. This suggests that the 'healing' power lies in the human mind’s belief system rather than the mineral properties of the stones.
