The producer who turned medical talk shows into vaccine skepticism
In short: Del Bigtree has no medical training, yet he became one of the most influential voices in the anti-vaccination movement. By leveraging his background in television production, he transformed discredited theories into a massive media apparatus that reaches millions of people across various digital platforms.
Bigtree's influence stems from a career in television production rather than medicine. He worked as a field producer for 'Dr. Phil' and produced 30 episodes of the medical talk show 'The Doctors.' It was during his tenure on 'The Doctors' that he encountered Andrew Wakefield’s discredited claims regarding a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. Following this meeting, Bigtree departed the programme to write, act, and produce 'Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe' for Wakefield.
The 2016 film was widely panned by critics and described by epidemiologist W. Ian Lipkin as misrepresenting science and undermining public confidence in vaccine safety. Despite this, the film—along with a promotional bus tour and funding from the Selz Foundation—established Bigtree as a leading activist. He has since propagated conspiracy theories regarding SARS-CoV-2 origins, alleged government conspiracies to hide vaccine harms, and encouraged followers to ignore health authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bigtree's reach is significant; his website attracts approximately one million visitors per month. While platforms like YouTube and Facebook removed his content for misinformation in 2020, he successfully migrated to Rumble and Roku media players. He also serves as the CEO of the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN), where he received a salary of $234,000 in 2023. His work continues through political involvement, including roles in Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s 2024 campaign and subsequent leadership in organizations like the MAHA Alliance.
His advocacy has been characterized by medical professionals as fearmongering. He has faced criticism from the Anti-Defamation League for using religious symbols to draw parallels between vaccine opposition and the persecution of Jews. Furthermore, he has lobbied legislators to maintain vaccination exemptions while calling for the imprisonment of public health officials.
