The architect of Budapest's transit who became a political pariah
In short: Dávid Vitézy transformed Budapest’s public transport from a fragmented system into a modern network, only to be ousted in a high-stakes political drama. His career reveals how technical expertise can collide with geopolitical interests and the friction of rapid urban modernization.
At 15 years old, Vitézy became a key figure by helping establish the Urban and Suburban Transport Association (VEKE). By 2010, he was appointed CEO of the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK). During his four-year tenure, he oversaw a massive institutional reform, managing a team of 1,800 experts. Key achievements included the launch of the MOL BuBi bicycle system in 2014 with over 1,000 bikes, the creation of the Mór Balázs Plan for sustainable mobility, and the introduction of the FUTÁR traffic management system, which provided real-time data to third-party apps like Google Maps.
His technical leadership was marked by significant infrastructure projects, such as the reconstruction of tram lines 1 and 3 with innovative grassed tracks and the renovation of Széll Kálmán tér. He also spearheaded a vehicle procurement program for 100 new modern low-floor buses and trams. However, his tenure ended in 2014 following a strained relationship with Mayor István Tarlós. Tarlós dismissed Vitézy as an 'over-bloated' and 'autonomous' leader who was 'almost impossible to work with,' while others suggested his ouster was influenced by a Russian discrediting campaign due to his preference for Western European subway trains over Russian renovations.
Despite his dismissal, Vitézy remained a vocal critic of 'retrograde' transport plans, advocating for congestion charges and suburban railway lines. He later served as CEO of the Budapest Development Center (BFK) starting in 2020, where he focused on large-scale projects like the 'M5 metro line'—a high-speed regional rail system modeled after Germany's S-Bahn. His career serves as a case study on the complexities of urban planning, where the pursuit of integrated, high-tech transit can spark intense friction with local governance and international influence.
