The billionaire who claimed a plant-based diet could extend life to 125
In short: David H. Murdock lived to be 102, fueled by a strict pescetarian regimen and an obsession with longevity. From real estate tycoon to health advocate, he spent his final decades funding massive research initiatives aimed at reclassifying disease and unlocking the secrets of human aging.
David H. Murdock's journey to becoming a longevity advocate was paved by immense industrial wealth. After starting as a homeless veteran who flipped a diner for a $700 profit, he built a massive portfolio including Occidental Petroleum and Dole Food Company. By 1985, he had transitioned into a lifestyle of extreme dietary discipline. He became a pescetarian, consuming fish, seafood, egg whites, legumes, and nuts while strictly avoiding dairy, poultry, red meat, alcohol, processed sugar, and salt.
To maintain a strict daily schedule, Murdock consumed smoothies three times each day; these beverages featured up to twenty various vegetables and fruits, such as orange peels and mashed banana. Refusing any vitamin pills, he asserted that his particular plant-focused nutrition offered every requirement for attaining 125 years of life. This personal philosophy led him to establish the Dole Nutrition Institute and the California Health and Longevity Institute (CHLI) in 2006 to promote these dietary benefits.
Beyond personal health, Murdock's legacy is tied to large-scale medical infrastructure. He contributed over $500 million toward the North Carolina Research Campus and a research center in Kannapolis. His $35 million gift to Duke University established the MURDOCK Study, a longitudinal cohort of 12,526 participants. This initiative focuses on reclassifying diseases and improving health outcomes through the collection of biospecimens and health data from a 20-zip code region.
Murdock died in June 2025 at the age of 102. While his personal claims about living to 125 remain an individual assertion, his philanthropic efforts have created enduring platforms for clinical research into cardiovascular diseases and nutrition science.
