In short: Before he was a leading biogerontologist, Valter Longo was a student of jazz guitar. Today, his research into how nutrient-response genes regulate aging has transformed our understanding of how periodic, plant-based nutrition might protect the human body against disease.

Valter Longo’s journey into longevity science began with an unexpected detour through music. Born in Genoa in 1967, Longo moved to Chicago at 16 to study jazz guitar, eventually attending the University of North Texas. His shift toward biology was sparked by observing how his American relatives, though genetically similar to his family in Italy, suffered from much higher rates of diabetes and cardiovascular disease due to diets rich in sugar, meat, and fat.

Now a professor at the USC Davis School of Gerontology, Longo focuses on the fasting-mimicking diet (FMD). This is a five-day, plant-based regimen characterized by low calories, low protein, and moderate levels of fat and carbohydrates. Rather than promoting weight loss, Longo designed the FMD to mimic the cellular protections of periodic fasting, aiming to reduce the global reliance on expensive, 'prehistoric' pill-based medical cultures (S1:pg6).

The biological implications of FMD are a subject of intense study. In animal models of Lynch syndrome, periodic FMD cycles helped mitigate gut microbial dysbiosis by preserving beneficial species like Lactobacillus johnsonii. In human clinical pilots, three cycles of FMD were associated with a reduction in certain inflammatory biomarkers, such as C-reactive protein, following periodontal treatment, though researchers note these exploratory findings should be interpreted with caution.

Longo's career has not been without controversy. While his commercial venture, L-Nutra, achieved success with the ProLon diet, he faced criticism in 2017 regarding his scientific reputation. In response to being labeled a 'snake oil salesman' in some media, he ceased accepting consulting fees and donated his company shares to charity.
