The Dominion War: A serialized conflict that redefined Star Trek's narrative structure
In short: Beyond the episodic adventures of earlier series, the Dominion War introduced a sprawling, serialized epic. This conflict pitted an alliance of Alpha Quadrant powers against a shapeshifting empire, fundamentally altering how Star Trek stories were told and challenging the core values of its iconic characters.
The Dominion War was a central plot concept in the final two seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, though its foundations were laid throughout the preceding five seasons. The conflict primarily involved the Dominion—a superpower from the Gamma Quadrant—and the Cardassian Union against the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and eventually the Romulan Star Empire.
At the heart of the Dominion's power are the Founders, a race of shapeshifting 'liquid lifeforms' who established their empire between 2,000 and 10,000 years ago to defend themselves against persecution by 'solids.' To maintain control, the Founders genetically engineered specific classes of beings: the Vorta, who serve as administrators and diplomats, and the Jem'Hadar, who act as the empire's elite military shock troops.
The war's escalation was marked by intense infiltration and deception. Changeling infiltrators successfully sabotaged Federation vessels, such as the USS Defiant, and manipulated political tensions, including a failed joint Cardassian and Romulan strike into the Gamma Quadrant in 2371. Even the Klingon Empire was unknowingly compromised by a Changeling impersonating General Martok, leading to a brief conflict between the Klingons and the Federation before they eventually united against the Dominion.
The war's impact extended to the very structure of the series, shifting Star Trek from an episodic format to a serialized narrative. This shift allowed for complex themes that challenged character values, culminating in a series finale where the survival of the galaxy depended on the Founders rejoining the Great Link to combat a genetically engineered virus.
