In short: Originally conceived as three separate lines, the Downtown Line evolved into Singapore's longest automated MRT line. Despite facing contractor bankruptcy and rising costs that pushed the budget from S$12 billion to S$21 billion, this 41.9-kilometre network now serves hundreds of thousands of commuters daily.

The Downtown Line (DTL) is a complex feat of engineering that serves as the fifth MRT line in Singapore. Rather than a single design, it formed through combining three separate ventures: the Bukit Timah Line, the northern portion of the Eastern Region Line, and the Circle Line's Downtown Extension. This consolidation, finalized in 2007, created a network spanning 41.9 kilometres with 35 underground stations.

The construction process was marked by significant logistical and financial hurdles. While the initial investment was projected at S$12 billion (US$8 billion), the final cost reached S$21 billion (US$15.2 billion) due to increased construction expenses. The project also faced setbacks when the main contractor for three stations, Alpine Bau, went bankrupt in June 2013. This forced the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to appoint caretaker contractors to ensure work continued.

Technologically, the line utilizes the Siemens Trainguard Sirius communications-based train control (CBTC) system. It operates using Bombardier Movia C951 trains in a three-car formation. To manage the high density of the urban environment, engineers had to perform delicate maneuvers, such as diverting the Rochor Canal and underpinning existing viaduct foundations to prevent ground subsidence or structural damage to existing lines.

The line continues to evolve through planned extensions. Service at a two-station Sungei Bedok extension should start during late 2026, whereas a subsequent link to the North–South Line at Sungei Kadut is planned for 2035.
