From a small concrete house to a world-leading academic powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1860 as a training school for girls, Diocesan Boys' School has undergone a radical transformation. Once a struggling institution facing local anti-British sentiment, it has evolved into a top-tier international school, even reaching the number one spot globally for the International Baccalaureate in 2020.
The school's origins trace back to 1860, when Lydia Smith and the Female Education Society established the Diocesan Native Female Training School on Bonham Road. Initially housed in a small concrete building on a paddy field, the school faced significant challenges, including unpopularity due to anti-British sentiment following the Second Opium War. This instability led to the school being closed and later renamed the Diocesan Female School.
A pivotal shift occurred on January 30, 1869, when Bishop Charles Alford appealed to admit boys and transform the institution into an orphanage. This move was well received by the public, leading to the establishment of the Diocesan Home and Orphanage in September 1869. By 1892, the school had transitioned into a boys' school, with the remaining female students transferred to Fairlea Girls' School.
Throughout the 20th century, the school navigated significant historical upheavals. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the building was used as a military hospital for the Imperial Japanese Army. In the post-war era, the school underwent various administrative and structural changes, including the appointment of Canon George Zimmern in 1955, the first Hong Kong-born headmaster. In 2003, the school joined the Direct Subsidy Scheme, a decision that sparked intense debate among teachers and students regarding potential impacts on social equity.
Today, the school is a prominent institution located in Mong Kok, Kowloon. It has embraced digital innovation, becoming the first secondary school in Hong Kong to launch a dedicated mobile app in 2012. In May 2020, the school achieved global recognition by becoming the world's number one International Baccalaureate school, boasting an average mark of 42.
