In short: Michael Jackson’s 'Earth Song' was designed to be a global cry for the planet, but its creation was marked by peculiar studio behavior. While the world heard a towering gospel opus, the recording sessions involved a performer hiding under a mixing desk and a drummer nearly losing a deal over a simple drum kit.

Written on June 1, 1988, during the Bad World Tour, 'Earth Song' was intentionally crafted with a 'melodically simple' structure. Jackson’s goal was to ensure that fans worldwide, including those who did not speak English, could participate in the emotional message. The resulting ballad blends blues and gospel elements, incorporating religious imagery such as the Blessing of Abraham and allusions to Jesus to describe the devastation of war and environmental destruction.

The production process was notably unconventional. During the recording, Jackson was recovering from plastic surgery and chose to hide under a mixing desk to avoid being seen. He passed instructions to the bassist, Guy Pratt, through an assistant who pretended Jackson was not in the room. Additionally, a deal was struck with drummer Steve Ferrone: Ferrone would provide an electronic drum demo on the condition that he also provide an acoustic one. Jackson was so moved by the acoustic demo that he began dancing across the room, leading to the acoustic drums being used in the final version.

The song’s legacy is defined by its massive commercial reach and complex public reception. It reached number one in the UK, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland in 1995. However, its performance was not universally smooth; it was criticized by some as 'sappy' or 'flat,' and was even advised against being played following the September 11 attacks in 2001. Despite these varied interpretations, it remains a significant cultural touchstone, serving as the last song Jackson rehearsed before his death in 2009.
