In short: Every movement you make and every calorie you burn is a relay race of power. From the nuclear furnace of the Sun to the mechanical motion of your stride, energy never vanishes. It simply transforms, constantly shifting forms to do work in a universe governed by strict physical laws.

The fundamental principle governing our universe is that energy—the ability to do work—cannot be created or destroyed. Instead, it undergoes constant transformation, a process also known as energy conversion. This means that while the total amount of energy in an isolated system remains constant, its form is fluid. It manifests as light, chemical, mechanical, nuclear, electrical, heat, and sound. When energy moves from one state to another to perform a task, such as making a living thing grow or moving an object, it is participating in a universal relay.

On Earth, this cycle begins with the Sun, which acts as our primary source of power. The Sun's nuclear energy is continuously converted into electromagnetic energy, including light. Plants capture this light through photosynthesis, transforming it into chemical energy stored within their tissues. When humans or animals consume these plants, that chemical energy is further converted into heat to maintain body temperature and mechanical energy to power physical activities like walking, standing, or running.

Humanity has spent centuries learning to hijack these transformations for technology. Early milestones include the development of engines in the late 1600s and early 1700s by inventors like Thomas Savery and Thomas Newcomen, which sought to turn heat into mechanical work. However, physics imposes a limit on our efficiency: the second law of thermodynamics states that entropy always increases. This means every time energy is transformed—whether in a wind turbine turning motion into electricity or a light bulb turning electricity into light—some portion is inevitably lost as 'wasted' heat. Consequently, conversion efficiency can never reach 100%.
