Energy is not a constant in every corner of physics

In short: Most people learn that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but this rule has a major loophole. While it holds true for our daily lives, the extreme conditions of general relativity challenge one of the most fundamental pillars of modern science.

In standard physics, energy is defined as the capacity or ability to do work. It exists in various forms—such as kinetic (motion), potential (stored), thermal (heat), electrical, chemical, and nuclear. Our entire civilization relies on our ability to convert these forms; for instance, your body converts the chemical energy from food into kinetic energy for movement, while coal or natural gas is converted into electricity to power homes.

The foundation of this understanding lies in thermodynamics. It wasn't until about 1798 that Count Rumford first recognized heat as a form of energy by observing that the heat generated during cannon boring was proportional to the mechanical work performed. This led to the First Law of Thermodynamics, which states that energy is conserved—it can only be converted from one form to another. The Second Law adds nuance, noting that heat cannot flow spontaneously from cold to hot and that entropy in a closed system always increases.

However, there is a significant caveat: these rules are not universal. While the conservation of energy is a cornerstone of classical physics, it faces complications in the realm of general relativity. Physicists like Dr. Don Lincoln at Fermilab note that the non-conservation of energy can occur in certain relativistic contexts. This means that while 'energy' is a reliable tool for engineering our world and understanding thermodynamics, its behavior becomes much more complex and contested when we look at the fabric of spacetime.
