The women's college that pioneered global education through mandatory study abroad
In short: Founded in 1885 to provide women with higher education, Goucher College has evolved from a Baltimore seminary project into a modern, coeducational institution. Today, it stands as a leader in global learning, being one of the first universities in the United States to require every undergraduate to study abroad.
Goucher College's origins lie in the late 19th-century Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1881, a Baltimore conference resolution proposed a seminary, but leaders like John B. Van Meter and John Franklin Goucher pushed for a more ambitious female college. The Woman's College of Baltimore City was officially chartered on January 26, 1885, and opened its doors in 1888.
For over a century, the institution served as a vital gateway for women in academia. During the start of the 1900s, the institution fostered pioneering women in medicine and science, such as Hattie Alexander, Florence B. Seibert, and Margaret Irving Handy. The college's history is also tied to political figures, such as Judge Sarah T. Hughes, who administered the oath of office to Lyndon B. Johnson, and Jessie Woodrow Wilson Sayre, a key figure in the women's suffrage movement.
The college underwent significant structural changes, relocating from its original Baltimore campus to a suburban Towson campus in 1953. In 1986, after 101 years as a women's college, the board of trustees voted to become coeducational, a move driven by declining enrollment and changing national interests. This transition was marked by a significant endowment increase, growing nearly five-fold from $45 million in 1986.
Today, Goucher is recognized for its commitment to global perspectives. Mandating overseas study for every undergraduate began in 2006, a method first implemented with schools such as Soka University of America and Susquehanna. The college continues to expand its scientific capabilities, with construction underway for the Judy C. Lewent '70 Science Center, slated to open in fall 2027.
