In short: In 2001, Ford launched a bold experiment: a mid-size vehicle that blurred the lines between a rugged utility truck and a comfortable family SUV. The Explorer Sport Trac wasn't just a new model; it was a structural hybrid designed to bridge the gap between the Ranger and the F-150.

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac was a unique mid-size pickup manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky, between the 2001 and 2010 model years, notably skipping 2006. While it shared much of its DNA with the Ford Explorer SUV, it was functionally a crew-cab pickup. To create the necessary utility, Ford engineers lengthened the Explorer's 111.6-inch wheelbase to 125.9 inches and added a 50-inch pickup bed made of plastic composite material.

The vehicle's evolution saw significant mechanical shifts. The first generation relied on a 4.0L V6 engine producing 210 hp. By the second generation, which debuted as a 200 and 7 model year, Ford introduced a 4.6L V8 option producing 218 hp. This new iteration also moved to a four-wheel independent suspension, making it only the third pickup truck to utilize such a layout, following the Honda Ridgeline and Hummer H1.

The Sport Trac's lineage also included ambitious, unfulfilled projects. Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) originally developed the Sport Trac Adrenalin as a high-performance successor to the F-150 Lightning, featuring a supercharged 4.6L V8 capable of 390 hp. However, due to 'The Way Forward' corporate strategy, the project was cancelled, though many of its aesthetic elements eventually transitioned into a standard 2008 appearance package.

As Ford transitioned the fifth-generation Explorer to a unibody crossover in 2011, the Sport Trac era ended in October 2010. Its market role was largely inherited by the fourth-generation Ford Ranger in its SuperCrew configuration.
