In short: Greenwood, Indiana, is often defined by its modern suburban appeal and family-friendly parks. Yet, beneath its contemporary surface lies a complex legacy—from early industrial dominance in the canning trade to a documented history as one of the state's notorious sundown towns.

Greenwood’s development was shaped significantly by the J.T. Polk Canning Company. At one point, this cannery was the largest operation west of Baltimore, serving as a major employer and driving early growth. The company eventually diversified into the dairy market, providing milk delivery to local customers before being purchased by the Stokely-Van Camp company in the 1950s.

The city's social history contains darker chapters that contrast with its current identity. In February 1965, an Indiana Civil Rights Commission report identified Greenwood as one of 19 'sundown towns' in the state—communities where African Americans were prohibited from staying after dark. The report noted the city had been exclusively white since the 1920s and detailed instances of racial hostility, including a family who was forced to revoke a home sale following threats from neighbors.

Today, Greenwood is characterized by its extensive recreational infrastructure and strategic location. It features 17 parks spanning over 400 acres, including Northwest Park (over 12 acres) and University Park (40 acres). Situated roughly 11 miles south of downtown Indianapolis, it serves as a primary residential hub for families seeking a lower cost of living and shorter commutes compared to neighboring cities.

The city's transition from 'Smocktown' to 'Greenfield' in 1825, and finally to Greenwood in 1833, reflects its early settlement by European Americans on land originally inhabited by the Delaware Indians (Lenape). Its infrastructure has evolved from the first real interurban electric railway in 1900 to a modern network of over 200 miles of public streets.
