Your scalp is a rotating factory of life and death
In short: While your hair seems like a static feature, it is actually a dynamic biological conveyor belt. Every strand on your head is at a different stage of a rigorous lifecycle, moving from rapid production to programmed regression and eventual shedding in a continuous, independent rotation.
The human hair cycle is governed by four distinct phases: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. The anagen phase is the most active period, characterized by high mitotic activity where proliferating matrix cells in the hair bulb produce the hair shaft. During this time, melanocytes interspersed within the bulb provide pigmentation, while the dermal papilla at the base of the follicle acts as a control center, determining both the size and quantity of these matrix cells.
Growth is not infinite; it is interrupted by programmed biological signals. The transition from growth to regression begins with the catagen phase, followed by telogen, a period of quiescence or rest. Finally, the exogen phase marks the actual shedding of the hair. While most people have approximately 100,000 scalp hairs at any given time, the overall density remains stable because follicles cycle independently. On average, an individual sheds between 100 and 150 telogen hairs every day.
The balance between these phases is delicate and highly sensitive to external and internal inputs. Factors like inflammation, hormonal shifts, stress, nutritional deficiencies, and poor sleep can prematurely push follicles from the growth phase into the resting phase. Conversely, hair health can be supported by increasing blood flow, direct follicle stimulation, and specific growth factors that encourage the transition back into anagen. Over a lifetime, each individual hair follicle is estimated to undergo between ten and thirty of these complete cycles.
Understanding this cycle reveals why hair loss is rarely a sudden event for all hairs at once. Because follicles operate on their own schedules, clinical interventions often focus on shifting the balance toward anagen production by addressing systemic health factors that trigger premature regression.
