In short: In 1895, the Harris brothers were trying to solve a simple problem: how to feed paper into a printing press faster. They succeeded so well that their company eventually transformed into a global defense giant, moving from the mechanics of ink to the complexities of electronic warfare.

Founded in Niles, Ohio, as the Harris Automatic Press Company, the firm began by developing an automatic sheet feeder. This innovation was a massive leap in productivity, increasing the output of older printing methods by nearly ten-fold. By 1917, the company had established itself as a pioneer in commercial printing and offset lithography, eventually moving its primary operations to Cleveland.

The mid-20th century marked a radical pivot toward electronics and defense. Following a series of strategic mergers—including the acquisition of PRD Electronics in 1959 and Radiation, Incorporated in 1967—the company gained the expertise needed for semiconductor and communication systems. A key milestone occurred in 1951, when Harris developed a portable printing press for the U.S. Army to produce on-site multicolor maps and reconnaissance photos, bridging the gap between traditional printing and military technology.

By 1970, electronics accounted for 50% of the company's $380 million in sales. This shift culminated in a move to Melbourne, Florida, in 1978, where it became a major player in aerospace and microwave weaponry. While it eventually sold off its printing operations in 1983, the company's trajectory from a mechanical press manufacturer to a top federal contractor highlights a profound industrial evolution. In 2019, the entity merged with L3 Technologies to form L3Harris Technologies.

The company's history is a study in industrial adaptation. It navigated the transition from the era of physical sheet-fed presses to the digital and electronic age, acquiring brands like Gates Radio and Intertype Corporation to secure dominance in broadcast transmitters and typesetting. Today, its legacy lives on in advanced surveillance solutions and spaceborne antennas.
