In short: Your brain is not a muscle, but it is the most complex command center in the human body. Weighing about 3 pounds in an average adult, this intricate web of billions of neurons processes everything from your deepest fears to the simple act of swallowing.

While often thought of as purely 'meat,' the human brain is remarkably fatty, consisting of approximately 60% fat. The remaining 40% is a mixture of water, protein, carbohydrates, and salts. It functions by sending and receiving chemical and electrical signals to interpret sensations like pain or fatigue, relaying messages through the spinal cord to the body's extremities.

The brain's architecture relies on the distinction between gray and white matter. Gray matter, primarily composed of neuron cell bodies (somas), is responsible for processing and interpreting information. In contrast, white matter consists of axons wrapped in a protective coating called myelin, which act as the transmission lines connecting different regions. This structural organization allows the cerebrum—the brain's largest part—to manage high-order functions like reasoning, speech, and conscious awareness.

Deep structures provide the biological foundation for survival. The brainstem manages automatic processes like heart rate and breathing, while the hypothalamus regulates 'homeostatic' needs such as hunger, thirst, and body temperature. Meanwhile, the limbic system houses the amygdala, which processes fear and emotional memories, and the hippocampus, which is essential for forming new declarative memories and spatial navigation.

Sensory coordination is managed by specialized relay stations. The thalamus acts as a 'switchboard,' sending sensory information to the cerebral cortex from the rest of the body. Nearby, the cerebellum fine-tunes muscle activity for precise tasks like typing or playing an instrument. Together, these regions ensure that every movement and thought is perfectly synchronized.
