In short: For decades, JEF United Chiba held a record as the only Japanese club never to be relegated from the top division. That streak finally ended in 2009, but their journey from a 1946 company team to J1 League contenders is a remarkable story of survival and resurgence.

Founded in 1946 as the Furukawa Electric Soccer Club, the team was a founding member of the Japan Soccer League in 1965. While competing in the JSL, the team dominated, securing two league titles, four Emperor's Cups, and three JSL League Cups. They also achieved continental success, becoming the first Japanese club to win the 1986–87 Asian Club Championship.

The club has navigated significant structural shifts in Japanese football. In 1991, a merger with JR East's company team created East Japan JR Furukawa Football Club, eventually rebranding as JEF United Ichihara during the J.League's 1993 founding. JEF United holds the distinction of being the only J.League team whose corporate name survived the transition from the JSL, a period when the league mandated that corporate teams adapt to specific hometowns.

After a long tenure in the top flight, the club was relegated to J2 in November 2009, ending a 44-season run. Following years in the second division, JEF United Chiba finally secured promotion back to the J1 League in 2025. Their return was secured after a dramatic 4–3 semi-final victory against RB Omiya Ardija, followed by a 1–0 win over Tokushima Vortis in the promotion play-offs.

Today, the club is based in Chiba, having adopted the name JEF United Chiba in 2005 after Chiba city joined Ichihara. They play their home matches at the Fukuda Denshi Arena and compete under the philosophy 'Win By All,' a tagline adopted in 2001.
