How a software translation firm became a global video game powerhouse
In short: In 1998, Keywords International was a small business software specialist. Fast forward to today, and it has transformed into a massive industry pillar. By pivoting from simple localisation to a comprehensive 'one-stop shop' for game development, the company has quietly become an essential architect of modern gaming.
Giorgio Guastalla and Teresa Luppino established the firm in 1998; originally called Keywords International, its first focus involved localising business software. A significant strategic shift began in 2004 as the firm moved into the video game industry. By 2009, under the leadership of CEO Andrew Day, the company had 50 employees and revenues of €3.5 million. Day’s vision was to transform the fragmented supplier market into a centralized service hub, reducing the firm's reliance on any single client. The firm's regional presence expanded with new offices in Tokyo, Montreal, and Seattle. This growth was driven by a five-year plan to diversify its client base.
This strategy relied heavily on aggressive acquisition. Following its 2013 initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange, Keywords Studios began purchasing numerous specialized firms, including Liquid Violet, Tantalus Media, and Heavy Iron Studios. By the end of 2016, the workforce had grown to 2,600 employees. The company's scale expanded further with the 2017 acquisition of VMC, which added 1,300 staff and established the firm as a leading provider of quality assurance. The company also launched Keywords Ventures to support various startups. This venture capital fund was established in July 2018.
The business currently functions via seven separate divisions: audio recording, art, engineering, functional testing, localisation, player support, and translation. As of 2023, Keywords Studios employs 12,340 people. While the company often stays 'under the radar' by not releasing products under its own name, its influence is vast. A £2.2 billion acquisition by investors headed by EQT AB triggered a significant shift in 2024, resulting in the firm's removal from the London Stock Exchange. In March 2024, the firm helped found the Gaming Safety Coalition to improve mental health in online gaming. This initiative involves collaboration with companies like Active Fence and Modulate.
