From footballing powerhouse to second-tier struggle: the resilient rise of Tokyo Verdy
In short: Once the undisputed kings of Japanese football, Tokyo Verdy’s journey has been a dramatic pendulum swing between era-defining dominance and years of heartbreak in the lower leagues. Discover how a club built on star power survived financial upheaval and relocation to reclaim its place at the top.
Founded in 1969 as Yomiuri Football Club, the team was born from a vision to create a Japanese football equivalent to the Yomiuri Giants baseball dynasty. Backed by the Yomiuri Group and NTV, the club quickly ascended through the Japanese football pyramid, reaching the First Division in 1978. During the early 1990s, as the J.League professionalized, the club—then known as Verdy Kawasaki—became a true juggernaut. They secured an incredible run of four consecutive league titles between 1990 and 1994, alongside multiple Emperor's Cup and J.League Cup trophies.
However, this era of 'star-studded' dominance, featuring icons like Kazuyoshi Miura and Ruy Ramos, eventually faltered. A cooling of the J.League fad and a downturn in the national economy forced the club to cut expenses, meaning they could no longer afford expensive replacements for aging legends. This period of decline was compounded by identity crises; attempts to become 'Japan's Team' alienated local Kawasaki fans, and mounting debts eventually forced a relocation to Chōfu, Tokyo, in 2001.
The club's history since the turn of the millennium has been defined by the struggle for stability. After years of fluctuating between divisions and facing the loss of direct financial support from NTV in 2009, Verdy endured a long period in the J2 League. Yet, the club's commitment to youth development and its deep-rooted history provided the foundation for a recent resurgence. In December 2023, following a dramatic 96th-minute penalty equalizer by Itsuki Someno, Tokyo Verdy finally secured promotion back to the J1 League, marking their first return to the top flight since 2008.
