The man who shaped a dictator's ideology and morality
In short: Before Saddam Hussein became a global figure, he was a boy living with his uncle, Khairallah Talfah. Talfah was a radical nationalist who shaped the young man's worldview through his own extreme ideologies, personal wealth, and a strict—often violent—enforcement of social morality.
Khairallah Talfah was a pivotal figure in the Iraqi power structure, serving as a military officer, politician, and close relative to Saddam Hussein. Born in 1910, Talfah was a staunch Arab nationalist who opposed British rule. His influence on Saddam was profound; the future dictator lived with Talfah for several years during his youth and reportedly idolized his uncle. This relationship provided a foundational blueprint for Saddam's later governance, particularly regarding his nationalist policies and his treatment of perceived enemies.
Talfah's ideological leanings were documented as early as 1940 in a pamphlet where he expressed extreme animosity toward Persians and Jews, comparing them to pests. These writings were noted by observers as an Iraqi imitation of Nazi rhetoric and are believed to have influenced Saddam's subsequent Arabization campaigns and actions during the Iran–Iraq War. Despite these views, Talfah also reportedly intervened to save some Jews from detention during Saddam's reign.
As Governor of Baghdad from 1979 to 1981, Talfah became notorious for 'morality policing.' He ordered security forces to physically deface women wearing Western-style clothing and to destroy fashionable trousers worn by both sexes. His tenure was marked by accusations of corruption and the mismanagement of state funds. He also built a massive personal fortune by exploiting government-subsidized goods and manipulating land sales to military and civil service workers, creating a retail empire known as the Khairallah Talfah Society.
The Talfah family's behavior reflected a sense of superiority that permeated the regime. Talfah's daughter, Ilham, was reported to have used her father's influence to have a classmate arrested at school for disagreeing with her. Even as Talfah's own health declined—leading to the amputation of his legs due to diabetes—his family remained central to the inner circle of the Ba'athist elite, illustrating how personal lineage and radical ideology intertwined to form the backbone of the regime.
