The invisible trade-off between an object's position and its motion
In short: Mechanical energy is the sum of two distinct states: potential, which is stored by where something sits, and kinetic, which is the energy of movement. In a perfect world, these two values swap back and forth perfectly, but in our reality, friction constantly steals from the total.
Mechanical energy is defined as the sum of an object's kinetic energy (energy of motion) and its potential energy (energy stored by the position of its parts). In idealized systems governed only by gravitational forces, this total remains constant. When a body travels against a conservative net force—such as ascending against gravity—the kinetic energy drops as potential energy rises. Kinetic energy is determined by both mass and speed. For objects moving at standard speeds, translational kinetic energy is calculated as one-half the product of mass and the square of velocity (1/2mv²). However, this formula fails as an object approaches the speed of light (3 × 10⁸ metres per second), where its mass increases and relativistic equations must be applied.
For rotating bodies, the calculation shifts to use the moment of inertia and angular velocity. In the real world, mechanical energy is rarely perfectly conserved because of nonconservative forces like friction. When these forces act, some mechanical energy is converted into other forms, such as thermal energy—a relationship discovered by James Prescott Joule. This conversion is central to modern technology: electric motors turn electrical energy into mechanical motion, while generators do the opposite, and heat engines convert heat back into movement.
