The agricultural miracle that built a Colorado powerhouse
In short: While most of Colorado was defined by the frantic rush for gold and silver, Larimer County took a different path. It bypassed the mining boom entirely, betting instead on the soil. This shift from mineral wealth to irrigation-fed agriculture fundamentally shaped the region's settlement and modern identity.
The development of Larimer County stands as a geographical outlier in Colorado history. During the initial days of the Colorado Gold Rush, while neighboring regions were being carved up by miners, the mining boom almost entirely passed this county by. Instead of seeking wealth beneath the surface, early settlers focused on what could be grown above it. This transition was made possible in the 1860s through the introduction of irrigation systems, which facilitated the first widespread settlement in an area many initially thought unsuitable for farming.
This agricultural foundation evolved through several distinct 'booms.' A second surge occurred in 1902 with the cultivation of sugar beets and the construction of a large processing plant in Loveland, which drew significant numbers of German emigrants from the Russian Empire. This was followed by a third major expansion in the 1930s during the Great Depression. The Colorado Big Thompson Project captured Western Slope water and transported it to Larimer County, creating an extensive distribution system that significantly extended the growing season and brought vast new lands under irrigation.
Today, this legacy persists in the county's infrastructure and demographics. While Fort Collins serves as the primary urban hub—home to Colorado State University—the surrounding landscape remains defined by its history of water management and farming. The county now balances a diverse population of over 359,000 residents, where 89.8% live in urban areas, yet the underlying economic and physical geography remains rooted in the irrigation-driven agriculture that defied early expectations.
