In short: Jefferson County, or Jeffco, is more than a Denver suburb. From its origins as a breakaway territory during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush to its status as the state's population center, this county has evolved from a rugged mining frontier into a pivotal political and economic engine of the American West.

Jefferson County’s identity is rooted in the 1858 discovery of gold along the South Platte River. Frustrated by remote territorial governments in Kansas and Nebraska, settlers organized the Territory of Jefferson in 1859. Although this provisional government never received federal sanction, the county was formally organized in 1861 when President James Buchanan signed the act creating the Territory of Colorado. The county seat, Golden, served as the capital of Colorado twice, cementing the region's early political importance.

The county’s landscape has been shaped by both industry and tragedy. It hosted the Rocky Flats Plant, which produced nuclear weapons from 1952 until 1989, and today houses the Denver Federal Center, the largest concentration of federal agencies outside Washington, D.C. The county also holds a somber place in history as the site of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. The subsequent investigation and legal fallout involving the Sheriff’s Office became a defining moment for local governance and law enforcement accountability.

Politically, Jeffco has undergone a dramatic transformation. Once a reliable Republican stronghold that voted for GOP presidential candidates in every election but one between 1940 and 2004, the county has shifted decisively. Since 2008, it has supported Democratic presidential candidates in every cycle, mirroring broader shifts in the Denver metropolitan area. This change extends to local leadership, where Democrats have recently gained control of the county commission and major countywide offices, including the election of the first female sheriff in 2022.
