In short: From the golden age of Hollywood to the infrastructure of modern energy, Loews Corporation has spent nearly 80 years pivoting its portfolio. By dismantling iconic movie theaters to unlock valuable real estate, the Tisch family built a diversified empire spanning insurance, luxury hotels, and global energy.

Following the 1948 Supreme Court antitrust decision in United States v. Paramount Pictures, Inc., the contemporary Loews Corporation was established. This legal mandate required film studios to divest from their associated cinema chains. Loew's Theatres, a domestic network of 102 cinemas, saw its controlling stake bought by Laurence and Robert Tisch in 1959. While the theaters were aging and ill-suited for the multiplex era, the brothers recognized the underlying value of the city property. By the summer of 1960, they began a systematic demolition of these 'movie palaces,' selling the vacant lots to developers and pivoting toward a diversified investment strategy.

The company's growth was fueled by aggressive acquisitions and strategic shifts. In the 1960s and 70s, Loews expanded into tobacco, financial services (CNA Financial), and watches, growing revenues from $100 million in 1970 to over $3 billion by 1980. The 1980s and 90s saw further diversification into energy and media, including a significant but brief ownership stake in CBS. The firm experienced significant instability when its branch, Diamond Offshore, entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy during April 2020 because of the COVID-19 recession and falling oil requirements, before Noble Corporation acquired it in September 2024.

Today, Loews operates as a value-oriented conglomerate with a focus on long-term capital allocation, notably reducing its shares outstanding from 1.3 billion in 1971 to 291 million by 2020. The present holdings comprise Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, overseeing roughly 14,000 miles of pipelines, and CNA Financial, which reached a peak core income of $1.3 billion during 2024. The company remains a family-led enterprise, with Benjamin Tisch becoming the third generation of the family to lead the corporation as President and CEO in 2024.
