In short: Before it became the media giant known as Warner Communications, the company was a diverse service conglomerate. Its portfolio included funeral homes, parking lots, and cleaning services. By aggressively acquiring entertainment assets, this unlikely business entity eventually shed its service roots to focus entirely on film, music, and television.

The origins of Kinney National Company lie in the 1961 merger of Kinney Service Corporation and National Cleaning Contractors. Initially, the firm operated as a collection of mundane service businesses. Its core divisions included the Riverside Memorial funeral chain, a parking system founded by Manny Kimmel, and various maintenance and cleaning operations. Under the leadership of Steven Ross, the company began a rapid expansion, moving from its headquarters at 10 Rockefeller Plaza to acquire diverse entities like talent agencies, record labels, and publishing houses.

The company's pivot toward entertainment was marked by high-profile acquisitions, most notably the 1969 purchase of Warner Bros.-Seven Arts for $400 million. This deal transformed the conglomerate into a major Hollywood player. To comply with antitrust regulations, the firm had to divest its talent agency, Ashley-Famous, which was sold in April 1969. The success of the 1970 documentary Woodstock helped solidify the studio's resurgence, providing the momentum needed to shift the company's entire identity toward media production.

By 1971, the firm began systematically dismantling its service-oriented past. It sold its funeral home operations to Service Corporation International for $30 million and spun off its remaining non-media assets into a separate entity called National Kinney Corporation. In February 1972, the company officially reincorporated as Warner Communications Inc. This strategic evolution allowed the organization to move past its origins in parking and cleaning, eventually merging with Time Inc. in 1990 to form the foundation of what is now Warner Bros. Discovery.
