In short: Mornington Crescent is an improvisational comedy game where the goal is to pretend there are complex rules. While players name London Underground stations to reach the elusive Mornington Crescent, the real objective is to invent absurd strategies and fictional legalities to entertain the audience through pure, satirical nonsense.

Featured on BBC Radio 4's 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue', Mornington Crescent is a parody of competitive panel games. The gameplay is deceptively simple: panellists take turns naming landmarks or streets, most frequently London Underground stations. The ostensible goal is to be the first to name Mornington Crescent, a station on the Northern line. However, the game's true essence lies in the humorous, fabricated arguments regarding the legality and strategy of each move.

The game's origins are shrouded in debate. While Geoffrey Perkins claimed to have created it as a 'non-game,' panellist Barry Cryer suggested it had existed since the 1960s. Another theory from host Humphrey Lyttelton suggests the game was a weapon of mischief, invented by a team of drinking panellists to vex an unpopular series producer with rules he could never hope to understand.

The absurdity of the game has inspired various iterations and expansions. Beyond the London Underground, players have attempted to include locations from Paris, Saint Petersburg, and Washington, D.C. Variations have even emerged globally, such as 'Mornington Croissant' for the Paris Metro and 'Mornington Peninsula' for Australia. The game's influence is so pervasive that it has been played via post in magazines, via computer on the BBC Micro, and even on Usenet and Facebook.

The game's impact is even felt by the London Underground itself. When the actual Mornington Crescent station reopened in 1998 after a six-year closure for lift repairs, London Transport invited the 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' team to perform an opening ceremony.
