In short: Ola Electric isn't just making scooters; it is attempting to vertically integrate an entire industrial ecosystem. From manufacturing its own battery cells to establishing a massive automated 'Future Factory,' the company is betting on a transition from assembly to total production control.

Founded in 2017 as a subsidiary of ANI Technologies, Ola Electric was originally conceived to reduce fuel dependency for Ola Cabs. The company underwent a significant structural shift in early 2019 when founder Bhavish Aggarwal bought a 92.5% stake from the parent entity for just ₹1 lakh (about US$1,400), spinning it off as an independent powerhouse.

The company's growth trajectory is marked by aggressive capital injection and infrastructure scaling. It secured a $250 million Series B round in 2019 from SoftBank at a billion-dollar valuation and later raised over US$5 billion in early 2022. This funding fueled the construction of the 'Future Factory' in Tamil Nadu—a 500-acre automated complex featuring robotic welding, painting, and assembly lines designed to produce nearly a thousand scooters daily by early 2022.

A core pillar of Ola's strategy is battery independence. While currently sourcing from LG Energy Solution and CATL, the company invested $500 million in Asia's largest cell R&D facility (the Battery Innovation Center) and raised $380 million in late 2023 to build a dedicated lithium-ion 'Gigafactory.' This move aims to internalize the production of energy storage products for its vehicles and other applications by 2025.

Despite rapid scaling, the journey has faced significant hurdles. The company has navigated safety recalls, criticisms over workplace culture, and regulatory scrutiny regarding customer service complaints. It also recently pivoted its product strategy, scrapping plans for electric cars to focus exclusively on scooters, motorcycles, and three-wheelers.
