The invisible engine driving every Windows operation from hardware to memory
In short: Deep within your computer lies ntoskrnl.exe, the core executable of the Windows NT kernel. It manages everything from hardware abstraction and memory to the infamous blue screen of death. Without this complex orchestration of processes and security, your modern operating system simply could not function.
At its core, ntoskrnl.exe serves as the central manager for the Windows NT operating system. It is responsible for critical tasks including process handling, memory management, and hardware abstraction. It also houses the scheduler, known as the Dispatcher, the security reference monitor, the cache manager, and even the code responsible for the blue screen of death.
The kernel's architecture has evolved significantly over time. In versions prior to Windows Vista, Microsoft shipped four distinct kernel image files to accommodate different hardware configurations, such as uniprocessor or symmetric multiprocessor systems, and CPUs with or without Physical Address Extension (PAE). However, starting with Windows Vista, Microsoft unified these images as multi-core CPUs became standard and PAE became mandatory.
The kernel operates in a protected region of the virtual address space, specifically the upper part that is accessible only in kernel mode. This region is instantiated once for the entire system. When the system boots, the bootloader hands control to the kernel via an entry point called KiSystemStartup. The kernel then receives a Loader Parameter Block containing vital information, such as the path to the Windows Registry and hardware details.
To maintain order, the kernel uses specific prefixes to identify its internal subsystems. For instance, 'Io' denotes I/O Manager functions, while 'Ob' refers to Object Manager functions. Internal functions that are not exported use variations, such as adding an 'i' for 'Kernel Internal' (Ki) or appending a 'p' for 'Process Support Internal' (Psp).
